U.S. and International Highway Travel

Vehicle Size and Weight Restrictions in the United States

All standard models of the Mobile Hangar™ comply with Federal (U.S.) guidelines, which specify maximum weight and dimensions on the National Highway Network. Accordingly, the maximum width is 102" (8'6"), height is 13'6", and trailer length is 48'. Additionally, any of the U.S. States may increase the limits at their discretion.

Individual jurisdictions within each state (such as county and city municipalities), as well as the state itself, may impose reduced size and weight limitations, so long as the affected highway or public roadway is not considered part of the National Network. Currently, the National Network consists of the U.S. Interstate System and other designated highways which total over 200,000 miles.

In situations where a vehicle must travel on a roadway in a jurisdiction that has placed tighter weight and/or size restrictions on commercial vehicles, a special permit may be obtained. Generally speaking, the permits are easy to get, cost less than $100, and often can be obtained for one-year intervals. For online permitting services, click here.

Furthermore, non-commercial use of the Mobile Hangar™ may allow exception to the commercial permitting guidelines established by any jurisdiction.

Transportation of Hazardous Materials (Aircraft Fuel)

According to the U.S. Hazardous Materials Safety Regulations, transportation of aircraft fuel in quantities less than 450 liters (120 gallons) is considered non-bulk transportation (for the purpose of placard requirements). This classification is recognized by each state, and therefore special license endorsements or permits are generally not required.

However, dispensing or transporting of fuel is legislated by each state, and it is recommended that adequate research be done by the end user prior to dispensing or transporting fuel from the Mobile Hangar™.

Vehicle Size and Weight Restrictions Outside the U.S.

With the rapid growth of the global economic community, many nations are attempting to standardize their highway and transportation networks. Established nations are always interested in maintaining active trade, and transportation among the highways continues to be a primary conduit. As a result of this share interest, standards similar to the U.S. Federal Highway Administration are used throughout the world, especially in modern highway systems.

Due to the dramatically complicated global highway system (as well as ever-changing political and government entities), the Mobile Hangar™ cannot be assumed to be within limits in every jurisdiction. For our international customers, it is advisable to check with your local jurisdiction as to the legalities of transporting the Mobile Hangar™ on public roadways outside the U.S.

Drivers' License Requirements

To no surprise, each U.S. state has unique legislation that affects the transportability of the Mobile Hangar™ on public roadways. Most states, however, acknowledge that individuals and companies may operate a legal vehicle with a standard (non-commercial) valid driver's license, including vehicles that reach the standard legal limits of height, width, length, and weight. However, the following factors may affect the requirement of a commercial driver's license:

  • Transportation of hazardous materials
  • Operation of a vehicle "for hire", either for transporting goods or passengers
  • Operation of a vehicle exceeding certain weight limit
